The SCN receives direct input from the eyes through the retinohypothalamic tract. Specialized photoreceptive cells in the retina convey light information to the SCN. This light input helps the SCN synchronize the body's internal clock with the external environment, primarily the light-dark cycle. The SCN then sends signals to other parts of the brain and body to regulate various functions, including hormone release, body temperature, and sleep patterns.
